The Disney panel today at San Diego Comic Con featured the first footage from Oz The Great and Powerful. Promptly after it finished, the first trailer for the film was released. The film takes a cue from The Wizard of Oz, starting in black and white and standard screen size, then moving to color and widescreen as The Wizard aka Oscar Diggs arrives in Oz via a tornado. I would have taken it a step further and made it grainy like an old movie. A lot of the film looks to be CGI with settings and characters getting the treatment. The settings are almost too busy to be appreciated in a trailer. This film will, of course, be in 3D. Sam Raimi, the director of the “original” Spiderman films, takes the helm on Oz The Great and Powerful. The cast includes James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, and Zach Braff. Zach Braff tweeted/Facebooked that he is not in the trailer because his character is digital.
“Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot–fame and fortune are his for the taking–that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity–and even a bit of wizardry–Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.”
Oz The Great and Powerful is in theatres March 8, 2013.
