Saturday, September 28th the Beer, Bourbon, and Brisket Festival comes to the Panther Island Pavilion in Fort Worth, Texas. This event, which is hosted by Jack FM, features events and activities for all ages, including a great musical lineup featuring Jace Everett. I was fortunate enough to be able to send him a few questions in advance of this show while he is on the road promoting his latest release, Terra Rosa. These were his responses:
Do you enjoy doing shows at home? How do they compare to other cities?
It’s always fun to come home and play. I have a lot of great friends and family in Ft. Worth. It’s always been a place near and dear to my heart. I guess it’s both exciting and intimidating to play in a town where folks remember you from “back in the day”. It’s kinda like a high school reunion. You wanna be casual, but have your game face on too!
Have you had a chance to listen to any of the other acts playing at the festival? Is there any you are looking forward to seeing?
I was completely ignorant of both Whiskey Folk Ramblers and Somebodys Darling when we booked the show. But after checking out some of their music I’m pretty stoked. I’ll be looking forward to checking them both out.
What was your process for writing the current album? Do you collaborate with any other writers or maybe go to a quiet place?
“Terra Rosa” was really a labour of love for me. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years, but felt I finally had the writing chops to pull off in recent years. A few of my most trusted co-writers lent a hand on a few tunes; Dan Cohen and Stephany Delray most notably. But this was definitely my baby from start to finish.
This is an intriguing perspective for your music when telling people you wrote referring to the Bible, especially with a part of your fan base coming from True Blood, how do you feel about the fans response so far?
I don’t think any of my fans are very surprised by the album, not as far as the subject matter goes. I’ve always leaned pretty hard on the religious metaphor throughout my career. That’s what happens when you grow up in a charismatic/evangelical church in downtown Bedford, TX!
What is your favorite or most personal song on the new album and why?
It’s kinda like picking a favorite kid; you might have one, but it feels wrong to say so! I’ll pick my two favorite; “Love Cut Me Down” and “Lloyds Summer Vacation”. “Love Cut Me Down” really expresses some primal emotions for me and “Lloyd…” is just absurdly fun. It’s the feel good Sodom and Gomorrah hit of the summer!
