You won’t need an expensive badge to get into some of SXSW’s biggest official shows. But this year, you will need something a little different to just walk in: a guest pass. For the first time ever, SXSW is introducing the “guest pass,” a free pass that gets you into the Lady Bird Lake Outdoor shows and select other events.
Guest passes will be available at the outdoor show and during SXSW. The free credential gets you into: SXSW Gaming Expo, Flatstock 43, Music Gear Expo, Digital Creative Job Market, Renegade Craft Fair and the SXSW Outdoor Stage at Butler Park by Lady Bird Lake. The pass is designed to help maintain the increases in expected crowd size and events are limited to capacity, so it helps to get there early.
Austin area attendees can pick up a pass early to beat the lines during the festival. If you’re in the Austin area, you can go to select Whole Foods, Waterloo Records, Spec’s and other Austin locations to pick up the pass. Full location details are available at guestpass.sxsw.com. Once you have your pass, be sure to visit this site to register to win special prizes like Platinum badges and VIP stage access for the Outdoor shows.
The pass will be used for SXSW’s annual Outdoor Stage, which has moved this year from Auditorium Shores to the nearby Butler Park. Performances include Friday, March 13’s headliner Foster the People and Saturday, March 14’s headliner Childish Gambino. Saturday afternoon will also feature the Take Me to the River music showcase featuring Memphis legends. The Thursday performers are yet to be announced.
The guest pass is only needed if you do not already have a SXSW music wristband or official badge.
