Economist Paul Krugman & Win Butler Confirmed for Discussion on the Celebrity Economy in Music

How will artists make money in ten years? Twenty-five years? Economist and The New York Times columnist Paul Krugman has been confirmed to speak during the 2015 SXSW Music Conference about the future of the music economy on Thursday, March 19 at 12:30PM in Austin Convention Center Room 18ABC.

In a predictive piece in 1996, Krugman wrote about “the celebrity economy,” in which “creations must make money indirectly by promoting sales of something else.” Today, artists are increasingly turning to sponsorships and ad placement for funding, and with a new generation rising to fame on YouTube and Vine rather than through record labels, traditional revenue streams will only become less valuable.

Joining Mr. Krugman are Will and Win Butler (Arcade Fire), Nicky Berger (Berger Management),Tatiana Simonian (Nielsen), and Rembert Browne (Grantland), who will lead the discussion on navigating this changing landscape, what they predict lies ahead, and what they believe will be discussed at SXSW 2040.

This session is presented in partnership with All Things Go.

This session will be open to Music and Platinum Badge holders. Add The Celebrity Economy in Musicto your online schedule today!
